Chewing gum without sugar has health benefitsChewing gum has been shown to relieve the effects of stomach acidity by relieving heartburn and improving bowel function, it has been reported.

An Imperial College of London study showed bowel surgery patients who chewed gum had a higher rate of recovery than those that did not.

Commentators said this was due to the laxative effect of the gum, reported the Philstar.

However, earlier studies in California and Japan gave similar results from people who had undergone colon surgery.

A British study showed lower stomach acidity in people who chewed gum for 30 minutes after eating.

Professor of medicine at the University of Alabama Mel Wilcox said: "Chewing gum stimulates the production of saliva, which neutralizes acid in the esophagus. It has the same effect as an antacid."

It might be a useful home remedy for pregnant women with painful symptoms who want to avoid medication, the professor added.

Chewing gum increases the amount of gastric fluid, according to the National Institutes of Health.
