New research reveals that potatoes may give consumers more for their money by way of nutrients such as vitamin C and potassium.</p>
<p>A new study presented at the American Dietetic Association&#039;s Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo by researchers at the University of Washington analyzed data looking at the nutritional content of food, the price of produce and the eating habits of consumers. Their review showed that potatoes provided plenty of potassium at half the cost of other vegetables.</p>
<p>Potassium is a nutrient that is essential to heart function, muscle building and protein synthesis, according to the National Institutes of Health. It is also an electrolyte, which makes it essential to pH balance in the blood. Electrolytes such as potassium and sodium also affect the water content and blood pressure of the body. However, most Americans don&#039;t eat enough of the potassium they need, according to the researchers.</p>
<p>&quot;Potatoes deserve credit for contributing to higher diet quality and increasing vegetable consumption,&quot; said lead researcher Adam Drewnowski, Ph.D.</p>
<p>Eating potatoes that have been baked, boiled or roasted is a good way to add potassium and vitamin C to the diet, the researchers said.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, most all of the foods that we eat  are acid-forming such as processed food products, most bottled goods, fats,  oils, sugars, bakery goods, cereals and most cooked, fried and baked goods. The  modern American diet consists of 80 percent acidic foods and only about 20  percent alkaline foods when we should be eating exactly the opposite&mdash;80 percent  alkaline foods and only 20 percent acidic foods. </p>
<p>Acid overload can cause problems with your lungs,  liver and pancreas&hellip; eat away at the linings of your arteries&hellip; erode cartilage  and cause inflammation in your joints&hellip; cause premature wrinkling&hellip; wear down muscle  mass&hellip; weaken your immune system&hellip; and drain the calcium from your bones and put  you at risk of osteoporosis.</p>
<p>Acid overload is determined by your &ldquo;potential of  hydrogen,&rdquo; or pH level. The pH simply measures how acidic or alkaline your body  is on a scale of 0 to 14. A low saliva pH reading of less than 7.0 means you&rsquo;re  too acidic (bad), a pH of 7.0 is neutral and a saliva reading of slightly more  than 7.0 means your body is alkaline (good). However, most of us fall in the  acid range of 6.2 to 6.4. </p>
<p>But there are ways to combat acid overload. Minimize  stress, drink eight glasses of alkaline water daily, increase the  alkaline-forming foods and reduce the amount of acid-forming foods in your diet. <p>Cheryle Hart, M.D., has researched hundreds of hangover remedies. Her top recommendation for preventing and minimizing a hangover involves drinking a lot of water since alcohol is very dehydrating.</p>
<p>&quot;Studies show that alkaline electrolyzed water speeds up metabolism of alcohol and protects your liver better than regular, plain water,&quot; she said.</p>
<p>Hart said avoiding a hangover should start before you start drinking alcohol. In addition to drinking plenty of water beforehand, she said eating a meal with complex carbohydrates and some dietary fat as well as taking a vitamin B-50 complex supplement can help avoid feeling bad post-party.</p>
<p>Hart also recommends drinking water between alcoholic beverages and avoiding darker-colored drinks since they&#8217;ve been proven to cause more severe hangovers.</p>
<p>After partying, Hart said drinking at least 1 liter of water can help flush the alcohol out of your system and keep you hydrated.</p>
