Vitamin D and fish oil to be the subject of large government study

Supplements are the subject of a new government studyTwo supplements that have been the subject of much research into their health benefits have now caught the eye of the federal government.

The National Cancer Institute and other national research agencies are sponsoring a five-year study into the effects of vitamin D supplementation and fatty acid use in 20,000 participants through reviews of medical records, patient interviews and in-person exams, reports the Associated Press.

"Vitamin D and omega-3s have powerful anti-inflammatory effects that may be key factors in preventing many diseases," co-lead researcher Dr. JoAnn Manson told the news provider. "They may also work through other pathways that influence cancer and cardiovascular risk."

While the studies will focus on supplements as opposed to fortifying food with high levels of both nutrients, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says that there is already strong scientific evidence for increasing intake of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids.

In reviewing studies on hypertension, triglycerides and heart health, NCCAM found that omega-3s were effective in improving health measures related to those conditions, while the office of dietary supplements has found vitamin D3 chemicals to increase blood levels of the nutrient as well as food intake.ADNFCR-2035-ID-19232995-ADNFCR
