Black Tea Helps Control Diabetes

A new study in the Journal of Food Science has found that drinking black tea can help diabetes patients control their disease.
The study was conducted by researchers from the Tianjin Key Laboratory in China, who wanted to see which tea was the best for treating diabetes. They already knew that green, oolong and black tea contain polysaccharides that inhibit the absorption of glucose, which is beneficial to people with diabetes since they have trouble processing glucose.
The researchers found that polysaccharides in black tea are the most effective at preventing the body from turning starch into glucose.
"Many efforts have been made to search for effective glucose inhibitors from natural materials," said Haixia Chen, the study’s lead researcher. "There is a potential for exploitation of black tea polysaccharide in managing diabetes."
While the findings are encouraging, the degree to which drinking brewed tea will help inhibit glucose uptake is not clear, as the polysaccharides derived from the tea were chemically extracted in the team’s experiment.
Even so, this could be an important discovery in the fight against diabetes. Other natural supplements already used by some diabetes patients include bitter melon, fenugreek, and cinnamon, which can help metabolize excess glucose.
