Red yeast rice supplement could lower cholesterol levels

An Asian food that is already marketed as a supplement may provide some with the ability to lower cholesterol levels, new research from the University of Pennsylvania suggests.
At the university’s school of medicine, researchers compared the effects of roughly 3,600 milligrams of red yeast per day in patients who had stopped taking prescription statins to reduce their LDL cholesterol levels because of painful side effects.
After monitoring the effects at three-month and six-month intervals, the scientists found that the supplements were more effective than placebo, but without some of the effects of prescription statins like pain, modified liver enzyme levels or creatine phosphokinase.
"I have to confess, I did not expect this degree of LDL lowering," lead author Dr. Daniel Rader told ABC News. "And there were many fewer side effects than expected."
While all patients, even those on a placebo, were given a nutrition and lifestyle workshop for up to 3.5 hours each week, LDL measures dropped by 43 points after three months, compared to 11 in the control group.
The scientists say that the supplement may work with a naturally occurring statin that affects the liver.
