But do they work?

Dr. Dee Anna Glaser, a professor of dermatology at St. Louis University and founding member of the International Hyperhidrosis Society, a medical group dedicated to the study and treatment of heavy sweating, tells the Los Angeles Times that although sweat does contain trace amounts of toxins, trying to induce sweating to cleanse the body isn’t effective.

"Sweating for the sake of sweating has no benefits," she told the newspaper. "Sweating heavily is not going to release a lot of toxins."
Instead, many experts say that heavy sweating can actually have the opposite effect, since it can cause dehydration and cause the kidneys to stop working properly.

Other detoxification methods, like chelation therapy and detoxification supplements, may be more effective in ridding the body of chemicals and improving health, according to some healthcare experts.

Nutritional supplements containing milk thistle, soy lechitin, artichoke leaf, turmeric root, burdock root and alpha lipoic acid (ALA) among other ingredients are believed to aid in cleansing the liver and kidneys.

The study, published in the February issue of the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, suggests that beer is a significant source of dietary silicon, a key ingredient for increasing bone mineral density.

"The factors in brewing that influence silicon levels in beer have not been extensively studied," said the study’s lead author, Charles Bamforth. "We have examined a wide range of beer styles for their silicon content and have also studied the impact of raw materials and the brewing process on the quantities of silicon that enter wort and beer."

The study tested 100 commercial beers for silicon content and categorized the data according to beer style and source. The average silicon content of the beers sampled was 6.4 to 56.5 mg/L.

"Beers containing high levels of malted barley and hops are richest in silicon," concluded Bamforth.

Previous studies have suggested that moderate beer consumption may help fight osteoporosis.

Natural health experts say cleansing can help a variety of common problems including feelings of sluggishness, aches and pains, and skin or digestive problems.

The author of the book Detoxification and naturopathic doctor Linda Page tells WebMD that detoxing can benefit nearly anyone. "It’s a way you can jump-start your body for a more active life, a healthier life," she said.

According to Gaiam Life, a website dedicated to natural, healthy and green living, cleansing or detoxification means cleaning the blood by removing impurities in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination.

The website suggests starting out by eliminating toxins like alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and saturated fats from the diet. It’s also important to minimize the use of chemical-based household and personal care products.

Cleansing kits are available in natural health stores or through online retailers. They usually range from three to seven day programs and generally contain fiber, vitamins, herbs and minerals.

Other options for helping the body detoxify itself include drinking only water for one day each week, drinking green tea and taking herbal supplements like dandelion root, burdock and milk thistle and reducing stress through yoga or other breathing techniques.

Flaxseed is believed to help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes, and now researchers say it may help prevent osteoporosis as well.

In an animal study, researchers tested how bone density was affected by flaxseed in both post-menopausal and diabetic rats. They found that flaxseed oil has a beneficial effect on bone mineral density and reduces markers associated with osteoporosis, suggesting that this dietary supplement could be beneficial to women with diabetes in reducing their risk of osteoporosis.

In addition, they say that diabetes in post-menopausal women may cause an increased risk factor for osteoporosis compared to the decline in sex hormones associated with menopause.

"We recommend further investigations using animals and humans to confirm the effect of using dietary flaxseed oil to improve bone health and to prevent osteoporosis," said lead researcher Mer Harvi.

In addition to fiber and antioxidants, flaxseed is high in omega-3 fatty acids. Researchers involved with the study say these fatty acids may play a role in protecting the processes of matrix formation and bone mineralization, which are apparently compromised by diabetes and the menopause.

Flaxseed is available in foods like cereals, pre-made baked goods and crackers. Flaxseed and flaxseed oil can also easily be added to foods like casseroles, oatmeal and baked items at home. According to WebMD, about one to two tablespoons per day is recommended.

"Rethinking Cancer" follows the therapeutic and psychological journeys of the men and women who chose alternative cancer treatments to battle the disease. All five of the patients have been disease-free for as many as 37 years.

The 56-minute educational film introduces the public and the medical community to what some believe to be the best, most natural ways to help the body fight disease – specifically balanced nutrition and detoxification systems that have been used successfully for decades.

"This film brings into sharp focus vital issues rarely addressed by conventional medicine – the root cause of serious disease, the inherent toxicity of prevailing treatments, food as medicine, the importance of detoxification and the subtle role of the mind in the healing process.
These patients’ stories also illustrate another very important message: that the success of bio-repair depends greatly on the understanding and personal responsibility of the patient towards their treatment," says executive producer Consuelo Reyes.

The patients highlighted in the documentary sought guidance from the Foundation for Advancement in Cancer Therapy, a non-profit that has served as an "information grapevine" connecting patients with educational materials and practitioners to guide them in energizing their body’s own healing powers since 1971.

New research indicates that fruit may contain higher levels of a type of beneficial compounds called polyphenols than was previously believed.

New research indicates that fruit may contain higher levels of a type of beneficial compounds called polyphenols than was previously believed.

The research was conducted by Dr Sara Arranz and was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. She found that in addition to the known extractable polyphenol content in fruits, there was also an unknown content that is not extractible but would nevertheless be metabolized when the fruit is eaten.

"These polyphenols are major constituents of the human diet with important health properties. To consider them in nutritional and epidemiological research may be useful for a better understanding of the effects of plant foods in health," says Professor Fulgencio Saura-Calixto, the leader of Arranz’s research group.

Polyphenols work much in the same way as antioxidants; they can remove free radicals from the bloodstream, prevent oxidation reactions and block certain processes involved in the development of cancer. Research has also been conducted as to whether the compounds can help treat cardiovascular disease and hypertension.

In addition to fruits, virtually every kind of tea has high polyphenol content. While eating more fruit is a positive step for those suffering from heart-related health issues, increasing the intake of antioxidants such as omega-3 fatty acids or Coenzyme Q10 may also help.

The FDA has labored for months to ban the sale of e-cigarettes within the U.S., so far meeting with resistance from distributors and defiance from consumers.

HealthNews reports that the FDA has this far been unable to ban the sale of these devices due to a dispute regarding their jurisdiction, but the agency nonetheless held a news conference in which they revealed that e-cigarettes emit nicotine, carcinogens and in one case chemicals found in antifreeze.

In addition to FDA personnel, prominent doctors spoke at the conference, some of whom said that these devices do not help smokers quit the harmful habit, and that they provide no real health benefits.

Smokers who would like to quit have several options that could be safer than e-cigarettes. Supplements like St. John’s Wort and ginseng have been included in successful smoking-cessation plans, while acupuncture and hypnotherapy have also proven useful to some.

He recommends in a Forbes report to "eat clean" for a week, including raw foods like berries and vegetables, as well as grains that do not contain gluten such as oatmeal.

Supplements can also be used "to correct metabolic issues that are draining" one’s energy, he told the news provider. "Coenzyme Q10, for instance, is a powerful antioxidant that is also fuel for the heart."

Along with the short-term benefits that Bowden finds in eating more fruits, vegetables and grain, incorporating increased amounts of those foods could also reduce obesity levels and the conditions caused by higher fat levels.

That is the conclusion Spanish researchers drew from research in adults who had similar eating habits as part of a Mediterranean diet.

They found that with higher fruit and vegetable intake over a 10-year period, adults were less likely to have put on the 7.5 pounds gained nationally on average over the same period.

If you have trouble functioning at home and work because of long-term fatigue and short-term memory, you may have chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). In America, one out of every 544 people suffers from the condition, and unfortunately depression is often one of the by-products of it.
The diagnosis of chronic fatigue can be made if you have experienced at least six months of persistent fatigue plus four (or more) of the following symptoms at the same time—and other known medical conditions that could cause fatigue have been excluded by your heath care provider:

Substantial short-term memory or concentration problems

Recurring sore throat and tender lymph nodes

Muscle pain

Pain in several joints without swelling or redness

Headaches of a new type, pattern or severity

Feeling tired and unrefreshed—even after sleeping

Extreme tiredness after exercise or other exertion lasting more than 24 hours

The real challenge is chronic fatigue can result from multiple sources—diet has much to do with it, as does mood, activity level and the health of your immune system. And various antigens—substances that stimulate the production of an antibody when introduced into the body—triggered by medications, virus exposure, vaccinations, heavy metals or environmental toxins all contribute to the symptoms of CFS.

Very few physicians know what to test for to uncover the causes. It takes a detailed history of your physical health, exposures, eating habits, stress, self-belief patterns, emotions and even relationships.

Fatigue and low energy can also fluctuate daily according to the foods you eat. But when you approach eating 50 percent of your food uncooked, you will definitely find your energy level improving. Foods full of refined sugar, high loads of wheat bread, dairy milk, cheese or fatty animal meats can be modified or replaced with nutrient-rich foods, and chronic fatigue states can’t last very long in that nutritious environment.

I also find that much of fatigue has a lot to do with holding one’s self back energetically by one’s own thought patterns. This may be an unconscious pattern such as fearing what others might think, thinking about the terrible “what ifs” that constantly arise or choosing inaction because we don’t feel capable or lovable enough.

For example, when your mind is idle or dwelling on unpleasant thoughts, your life force energy becomes low, which slows and tires your physical body.

Instead, say out loud, “I am a powerful force for good in the life of someone today. I am inspiring and joyful!” Did you notice a shift of more energy come into you as you said these words aloud? It works for me in every case.

This is called the language of “success,” or the language of “increase.” Thinking—and especially saying—such words empower you with energy and passion to do what you want in life. Reach out to others and feel how it can revive you and awaken your soul. And as you experience some sort of reaching out to another, just notice how it feels to connect to them and feel the energy that comes into you.

To sum up, if you discuss your symptoms with your physician, take the time to examine your food habits and improve your positive thinking, then you could be able to shake the symptoms of CFS. This will help you on the path to a healthy body and mind, and get you out enjoying your favorite activities again.

By cleansing the body, a person can eliminate toxic waste and "revitalize the natural functions of the body." One easy way to accomplish this is to drink water throughout the day.

Incorporating a healthy diet of whole food nutrition can also improve the body’s energy level, as well as reduce risk of heart disease and other conditions, according to the article. Eating superfoods such as blueberries, brown rise and garlic are also beneficial.

Also adding probiotics, which is found in some yogurts at the grocery story, can improve digestive health and restore energy to the body, states MapleRidgeNews.com. Those who do not like yogurt can find probiotics in pill form as well.

Those interested in increasing the energy in their body may also want to look at nutritional supplements to help them reach optimal health.
