Flaxseed may help prevent osteoporosis, according to studyIt’s one of a handful of so-called "super foods" that have been around for centuries and are now becoming part of mainstream diets. Flaxseed is believed to help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes, and now researchers say it may help prevent osteoporosis as well.

In an animal study, researchers tested how bone density was affected by flaxseed in both post-menopausal and diabetic rats. They found that flaxseed oil has a beneficial effect on bone mineral density and reduces markers associated with osteoporosis, suggesting that this dietary supplement could be beneficial to women with diabetes in reducing their risk of osteoporosis.

In addition, they say that diabetes in post-menopausal women may cause an increased risk factor for osteoporosis compared to the decline in sex hormones associated with menopause.

"We recommend further investigations using animals and humans to confirm the effect of using dietary flaxseed oil to improve bone health and to prevent osteoporosis," said lead researcher Mer Harvi.

In addition to fiber and antioxidants, flaxseed is high in omega-3 fatty acids. Researchers involved with the study say these fatty acids may play a role in protecting the processes of matrix formation and bone mineralization, which are apparently compromised by diabetes and the menopause.

Flaxseed is available in foods like cereals, pre-made baked goods and crackers. Flaxseed and flaxseed oil can also easily be added to foods like casseroles, oatmeal and baked items at home. According to WebMD, about one to two tablespoons per day is recommended.ADNFCR-2035-ID-19474761-ADNFCR
