He recommends in a Forbes report to "eat clean" for a week, including raw foods like berries and vegetables, as well as grains that do not contain gluten such as oatmeal.

Supplements can also be used "to correct metabolic issues that are draining" one’s energy, he told the news provider. "Coenzyme Q10, for instance, is a powerful antioxidant that is also fuel for the heart."

Along with the short-term benefits that Bowden finds in eating more fruits, vegetables and grain, incorporating increased amounts of those foods could also reduce obesity levels and the conditions caused by higher fat levels.

That is the conclusion Spanish researchers drew from research in adults who had similar eating habits as part of a Mediterranean diet.
