ADA: Right diet can lessen stress

A registered dietician can not only help people with a whole food nutrition diet, they may also be able to assist in managing stress levels, according to the American Dietetic Association.
This may be especially important during times of economic crisis when some people may experience heightened levels of stress.
Amy Jamieson-Petonic, ADA spokeswoman, said people should turn to a registered dietitian to create a healthy and cost-effective diet.
"Stress and anxiety can make it hard just to get through the day. Food has such an impact, not only on our physical health but our mental health and spiritual health. It is connected to so many levels of our being," Jamieson-Petonic said.
Her advice comes on Registered Dietitian Day, which comes in the middle of National Nutrition Month. It also follows news released this week about the increasing rate of unemployment in the country, which Jamieson-Petonic said can lead to more stress and unhealthy eating habits.
People with high blood pressure can reduce some of their medical costs by incorporating whole food nutrition into their diet, which can include fruits, vegetables and cutting down on sodium, according to the ADA.
