A national organization dedicated to preventing heart disease in women will launch a campaign to encourage heart-healthy habits next month.
The campaign is an annual effort by the Sister to Sister Foundation to raise awareness of heart disease, specifically in women.
According to the foundation, one in four women in the U.S. dies of heart disease, which is more than the total number of cancer deaths in the country. Past studies have also shown only a third of U.S. women consider themselves at risk for the condition.
Preventative cardiologist Dr Robert Vogel told MSNBC.com that diet is one of the main factors that can affect heart health.
One of the ways to improve heart health is for women, especially when they go out to restaurants, is to look for how food is prepared, according to the article.
"Just simply grilled or broiled – that’s a good word to look for. Not-so-good words to look for are butter, cream and cheese," Oceanaire Seafood Room executive chef Ben Erjavec told the news provider.
Women looking to improve their heart health may also want to look into nutritional supplements.
