Study reveals mixed results on whether diet can help relieve rheumatoid arthritis symptomsA new study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association suggests certain diets may help individuals suffering from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) eliminate some of their pain.

Researchers reviewed the results on 366 people with RA from eight previous studies. Subjects ate either a vegetarian diet, a vegan diet, a Mediterranean-style diet or an elimination diet.

They found that eating a vegetarian diet for 13 months or a Mediterranean diet high in fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and lean protein for 12 weeks may relieve pain.

However, researchers said that the positive changes patients reported may have more to do with overall healthier eating rather than adhering to a specific diet plan.

In addition, they said there was not enough data to draw conclusions on whether a vegan diet or an elimination diet can help relieve pain associated with RA.

RA is an auto-immune disease that leads to inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues. It is estimated to affect as many as 2.1 million people.

Exercise and relaxation, as well as hot or cold joint therapy, are believed to help manage the symptoms of the disease. According to the Mayo Clinic, alternative treatments include thunder god vine, certain plant oils, fish oil and tai chi.
