Food that is rich in fat and low in omega-3s could contribute to Alzheimer’s Disease, research has shown.
Investigators at the University Laval in Quebec City found mice fed a fatty diet showed a higher instance of two potentially brain damaging proteins.
Rodents showed 8.7 times more of one protein that threatens healthy brains, the study revealed.
Fat-fed mice had more tau proteins, which prevent neurons from functioning properly, and amyloid beta, which is associated with senile plaque.
Both are found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.
Study co-author Carl Julien said: "Metabolic changes induced by such a diet could affect the inflammatory response in the brain."
The Alzheimer’s Association recommends a diet of dark-skinned fruit or vegetables, cold water skinned fish and nuts for people with the disease.
People who care for people with Alzheimer’s should watch what patients eat and drink, as over and under-eating among patients is common, as is failing to take in enough fluid.
