GM cranberries for Thanksgiving?

More people are likely to get a helping of genetically-engineered cranberries with Thanksgiving meals this year following the patent of a new hybrid.
Crimson Queen was registered by a laboratory in Chatsworth by Vorsa in October last year, making this year the first the fruit makes it to our plates.
The hybrid was created in association with Rutgers University in New Jersey to tackle the seasonal economic shifts faced by growers.
By inventing a cranberry that can be produced all year round, one that is disease resistant and ripens earlier, researchers say there are now enough cranberries to go around Thanksgiving turkeys.
"Without productivity improvements, many would have to abandon growing this uniquely American fruit," research professor at Rutgers, Nicholi Vorsa, said.
However, Greenpeace International recently called for a recall of all genetically engineered food from the market.
It made the announcement following the results of an Austrian study, which showed GM food affected fertility.
