Nordic verses Mediterranean

It appears there’s a new diet that may give the Mediterranean diet a run for its money.
The Nordic diet, which is rich in rapeseed oil, elk and cowberries, may be better for one’s heart that the touted Mediterranean diet, according to new research.
Scientists at the University of Copenhagen found foods from colder climates, such as blueberries, cowberries and cloudberries, are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids as well as antioxidants. Both nutrients have been shown to improve one’s heart health.
The one similarity between the two diets is their inclusion of certain fish such as salmon, which is also high in omega-3 fatty acids.
Some people have adhered to the Mediterranean diet as a way to lower their risk of heart disease and obesity. However, the researchers involved in this new study said those in colder climates have had difficulty incorporating the diet into their lives.
"The plan is to develop a counterpart to the Mediterranean diet that is superior in terms of health effects and palatability," said professor Arne Astrup, head of the department of human nutrition at Copenhagen University.
To accomplish this, the scientists have set up a £12.2 million project to identify more heart healthy foods from colder climates, UK newspaper the Telegraph reports.
