Who wants to look good and live longer?
According to a new global policy report, approximately 45 percent of colon cancer cases and 38 percent of breast cancer cases in the U.S. are preventable through diet, physical activity and weight management.
The Policy and Action for Cancer Prevention, which was published yesterday by the World Cancer Research Fund and American Institute for Cancer, suggested all sections of society should place a high priority on public health and cancer prevention.
Within the report are 48 recommendations made by a panel of experts for nine different sectors that included civil society organizations, schools and workplaces.
Among the recommendations was a call for the government to require more walking and cycling routes to encourage physical activity. Also, schools should incorporate physical activity for their students and the food industry should make public health an explicit priority at all stages of production.
The latter may be seen as particularly timely given the recent food recalls around the country for salmonella and contaminated peanut butter products.
Recently, it was reported the Mediterranean diet, which includes whole grains, fish and moderate alcohol, may assist people in gaining optimal health.
