Foods with certain nutrients can improve one's eye healthA national organization is reminding Americans about certain nutrients that promote good eye health in preparation for March’s Save Your Vision Month.

The American Optometric Association along with registered dietician Elizabeth Somer recommend incorporating a diet with foods containing nutrients such as lutein and zeazanthin, which can be found in colorful fruits and vegetables. According to the AOA, spinach and other leafy greens are the best foods to eat for eye healthy because of their high content of the two nutrients.

Other nutrients that were suggested by the association were essential fatty acids, vitamins C and E as well as zinc.

"Nutrition is a component of health for the entire body, including the eyes," Somer said. "I suggest incorporating nutritious ingredients into daily menus. There are some great, quick and simple recipes that promote healthy eye sight and vision."

For pasta lovers, one of the recipes Somer suggests is whole-wheat penne with spinach and gorgonzola.

Approximately 30 million Americans aged 40 and older suffer from some level of vision loss, according to the AIA. Of that amount, 29 percent are coping with eye problems by increasing nutrients to improve eye health.ADNFCR-2035-ID-19050218-ADNFCR
