A new review of several studies suggests that supplementing with soy-based products does not affect men’s reproductive health.
"As a high-quality source of protein that is relatively low in saturated fat, soy can be an important part of a heart-healthy diet and may contribute to a decreased risk of coronary heart disease," said review co-author Dr William R. Phipps.
Although some men may have had concerns because of chemicals in soy that are similar to estrogen, researchers at St Catherine’s University found that there was no correlation after examining the results of 15 clinical trials and 32 additional reports.
Incorporating soy and soy-based supplements as part of a low-carbohydrate diet could improve the heart-healthy benefits, report scientists from the University of Toronto.
Patients who underwent a four-week diet consisting chiefly of plant-based proteins were able to lower triglyceride levels and increase good cholesterol levels while aiding in weight loss, said lead author Dr David J.A. Jenkins.
Other components of the diet that may have improved participants’ health included vegetables, nuts and fruit, the researchers noted.
