The Food and Drug Administration has told consumers to stop using some over-the-counter nasal sprays, but one doctor says that while homeopathic and natural remedies may offer a similar benefit, proper use is important.
Three Zicam brand products were recently pulled by the FDA after more than 100 people reportedly lost their sense of smell while using the product.
Alternative treatments "may be helpful on some level," says Dr Adam Pearlman of the UMDNJ-School of Health Related Professions, but says that people should still be mindful of the instructions for use, as natural remedies are only effective at the recommended dosages.
"A holistic approach to dealing with a cold also includes getting plenty of rest and a healthy diet," he added.
One option could be taking supplements that include sulforophane, an antioxidant found in broccoli.
Scientists at UCLA found that the chemical helped to reduce nasal inflammation when added to the diets of those exposed to environmental pollutants.
"This strategy may offer protection against inflammatory processes and could lead to potential treatments for a variety of respiratory conditions," said lead author Dr Marc Riedl.
