Older women's health was surveyedA review of the benefits of Vitamin E has concluded it does help heart health, according to a researcher.

It has been known to assist in the treatment of blood clots because it can promote bleeding, reported Science Daily.

One of the best examples of how Vitamin E has benefitted health was in the Woman’s Health Study where 40,000 women were given the vitamin or placebo to take for ten years.

A total of 24 per cent fewer women taking the supplement died from heart disease with its effects appearing to be stronger among women over 65.

Scientists now believe they can prevent over-bleeding via Vitamin E though its interaction with Vitamin K.

Maret Traber of Oregon State University, who conducted the review, said: "We need more research to understand the delicate balance between vitamins E and K.”

Despite lowering their risk of heart attacks, women taking Vitamin E in the study did suffer more nose bleeds.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects the body from damage and is important in the formation of red blood cells, according to the National Health Institute.

It occurs naturally in a balanced diet.
