5 Healthy Resolutions for the New Year

The New Year is a perfect time to make commitments to improve your life and health. Here are a few resolutions to consider that can make dramatic improvements to your health and well-being:

First
First, get a powerful start on every day with 30 minutes of meditation and stretching. It will become a time for you to release negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts. This meditation and stretching time will allow for increased circulation to body, mind and spirit. Choose at least 3 different movements of stretching that can be repeated from 5 to 10 times. These stretches need not be too strenuous, so your mind does not dwell upon pain or difficulty from the stretching. These could be as simple as leg lifts, kneeling back, or side bends and sitting toe touches. You will very likely feel the weight of stresses leave as you see clarity with your higher purpose in life.

Remember that your life’s experiences are for your learning and sometimes appear painful, yet often these painful experiences bring with them wisdom and power. Be thankful for these doors that are open to you for learning. I believe there is a higher wisdom that speaks to our spirits—and we should learn to listen to those communications.

In fact, I believe the most powerful way to keep our bodies in optimal health is to love ourselves and others unconditionally. Love is the nourishing, vitalizing, sustaining electricity of life. Love is the greatest healer!

Second
Successfully plan and eat real raw foods at least half of the time. By real foods I mean natural foods, unadulterated by the chemicals, cooking and refinement of our supermarket culture. For example, with your buttermilk pancakes, also eat a large fruit or vegetable serving for its live enzyme, mineral, phytonutrient and fiber content. And with your cooked turkey sandwich eat seeds, nuts or cultured milk products like plain yogurt, cottage cheese or goat cheese.

Third
Carry with you a medium-sized water bottle that you can fill up and drink from throughout the day. Drink half your body weight in ounces daily. For example, if I weigh 160 pounds, then I would need to drink 80 ounces of water, which is equal to 10 cups, 5 pints or 2 quarts. You could easily drink 2 cups with each meal, leaving only 4 cups to drink with snacks, or alone.

If you don’t like the taste of water try squeezing some fresh lemon or lime juice into the container of water. The natural result of drinking a healthy amount of water is proper alkalinity and improvement of organ functions.

Overweight patients who do this will lose weight directly from the water, and also because of a natural decrease in other less healthy liquids or foods. It really is a simple and empowering habit for the New Year!

Fourth
Take a few moments, either during your meditation stretches or just before going off to sleep, to implement time controls mandating you give relationships priority in your life. Plan out the minutes or hours of the day when you will be with loved ones with no other distractions, then double it. By doubling it, you allow for time to actually let go of the other stresses and demands on your time for those that truly matter most.

You will find that they will respond to you much the way you treat them—creating time for you and making you a priority in their lives. What you will find is a profound connection to the other powerful, loving, creative resources around you in life, your loved ones who now really are loved!

Fifth
Plan to give more than you receive in all you do. When we give goodness without expectation of payback, we create a natural draw of return to us. We naturally will see a return of goodness to us far greater than what we gave.
By giving more than we expect to receive, we become creators to a small degree, tapping in to one of the powers enjoyed by those of a higher dimension. The universe now feels that we are owed more than the thing we gave whether a commodity, money, or something we say or do for others, we are blessed to naturally autogenerate within us more ability to say, do and be the goodness we gave out.

I believe it is a simple but powerful law and a truth of the universe we can harness. Abundance is our birthright!

What Can You do about Alzheimer’s?

Are you losing things? Forgetting names? Losing your thought before you finish your sentence? These are very normal, and any dread that you may think of in terms of getting Alzheimer’s disease is usually just that—a temporary dread that has no basis. For most of us, we are just in need of a mental tune-up and deliberate actions.

Research has not found the definite cause of this degenerative disorder, but has shown that that people with Alzheimer’s may be suffering from deficiency in certain types of nutrition.

  • Studies have shown that people with this disorder have low levels of vitamin B12. As a comprehensive B-complex vitamin plan, I recommend 100 milligrams three times a day
    (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12).
  • Similarly, studies have found the mineral zinc to be deficient in Alzheimer’s sufferers. I recommend we supplement our diets daily with zinc up to, but not exceeding, 100 milligrams.
  • Gingko Biloba, as a plant extract, is known to have a positive impact on cells within the brain. I recommend up to 100 milligrams three times a day.
  • Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant that occurs naturally in the body and is needed for normal cell reactions to occur, particularly the ability of cells to carry oxygen. Take 100 milligrams daily.

Studies into Alzheimer’s disease show that metals may also be a factor. Care should be taken in detecting metals in all foods, and particularly in the water that you drink.

Stop Smoking Cigarettes

Smoking causes a tremendous amount of stress on the body, even as people supposedly smoke to reduce stress.

The toxic effects of smoking are reported in the same study by the Erasmus Medical Center (January 7, 2003) as being worse than stress, regardless of weight condition. In particular, they reported, obese female smokers died 7.2 years sooner than normal-weight smokers, and 13.3 years sooner than trim non-smoking women. Obese male smokers lived 6.7 years less than trim smokers, and 13.7 years less than trim non-smokers. Aside from this research, we also know that smoking is extremely addictive.

Smoking essentially causes oxygen absorption in the body to be impaired. Carbon monoxide, the main chemical in cigarettes, binds on to the oxygen molecules in the body and deprives it from being able to take in sufficient oxygen into the blood stream and to the tissues. Lack of oxygen helps reduces carbohydrate metabolism, resulting in less energy and less breath.

This means that not only is the body running on less energy, but our bodies will not think or react as quickly in times of critical decision making.

This also means that the ability of the body to ward off viruses and illnesses is inhibited. In fact, smoking creates the following specific issues:

  • Ulcers. Prostaglandins, a unique group of chemicals our bodies produce, are essential for the healthy lining of the stomach and small intestine. The production of these important molecules is stopped by smoking, resulting in the eventual creation of ulcers due to the acids of digestion. This is in addition to what stress does all by itself.
  • Heart disease. The toxic chemicals from smoking cause the sensitive arteries to be irritated. In reaction, the body secretes more fatty deposits on the arteries to reduce the irritation, which results in creating cholesterol layers that eventually constrict blood flow and increase the risk of disease.
  • Stroke. A stroke is a heart attack in the brain, and it is formed when blood flow is blocked by the clumping of platelets, cholesterol, fatty acids and calcium deposits over time. The carbon monoxide of smoke causes the arteries in the brain to react similarly to the heart arteries.
  • Wrinkling. Smoking also causes more facial wrinkles, with an accompanying discoloration.
  • Teeth Stains. Teeth are invariably stained as are a smoker’s fingers. Both issues are connected to the inhibition of vitamin C, collagen production, and natural close proximity to the smoke cloud of the cigarette.
  • Periodontal disease. The most common problem among smokers is the damage it brings to gums. It’s not surprising that smokers often lose teeth to gum disease.

Q & A

Each week in the Q & A section of House Calls with Dr. Cutler, I will share with you some of the many questions I get every week from subscribers to my monthly advisory newsletter, Easy Health Options™. For more information on Easy Health Options™, visit www.easyhealthoptions.com.

Coumadin® vs. Nattokinase

Q Dear Dr. Cutler,

I am a new customer for your True Health™ products. Thank you for offering quality supplements.

I order them for my 79 year old Mother, Edith. Mom had triple bypass surgery in April and has not done particularly well. She was placed on Coumadin, and I am determined to get rid of it because of the risk of a bleeding stroke. My Grandmother, Mom’s mother, died of a bleeding stroke, so I want Mom off the Coumadin ASAP.

Mom is taking your Ultimate Blood Flow Formula™ supplement plus 1200 IUs of mixed tocopherol vitamin E. The PT will be retested on Sept. 24. If the numbers aren’t so she can get off the Coumadin then, what more can she take so the Coumadin can be dropped? I will not rest until Mom’s off that junk forever.
[Note: PT test evaluates the ability of blood to clot properly.]

If you can legally give me this information, please do. I know I will get no cooperation from any regular doctor.

Thank you and God bless you.
Linda S.

A Dear Linda,

Edith’s PT will not likely show it in coumadin’s “therapeutic range because nattokinase works differently than coumandin to keep clots from forming in the blood.

You are definitely on the right track using vitamin E with nattokinase, yet I know of no clinical trials comparing coumadin head to head with nattokinase and vitamin E in various illness states.

It appears that bypass graft surgery is a minor indication (compared to a valve replacement), so once again, I strongly believe she could wean her coumadin (if she were my mother). Please understand this is not medical advice! It is your decision to use natural nutrients so trust your feelings on this. I encourage you to discuss your use of natural supplements and any wishes for medication changes with your health care practitioner.

To your optimal health!
Michael Cutler, M.D.
