Alzheimer’s, Dementia Risk Increase Linked To High Cholesterol

A long-running and comprehensive study found that elevated cholesterol levels during midlife significantly increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or vascular dementia later in life.
Researchers at Kaiser Permanente’s Division of Research and the University of Kuopio in Finland studied nearly 10,000 individuals over a period of 40 years and found that those with high cholesterol—defined as 240 milligrams or more per deciliter of blood—increased their chances of developing Alzheimer’s by 66 percent. Even those with slightly elevated cholesterol—as low as 200 milligrams per deciliter of blood—increased their risk by 52 percent.
The study’s senior author, Dr. Rachel Whitmer, explained the implications of her team’s findings. "Considering that nearly 100 million Americans have either high or borderline cholesterol levels, this is a disturbing finding."
"The good news here is that what is good for the heart is also good for the mind, and this is an early risk factor for dementia that can be modified and managed by lowering cholesterol through healthy lifestyle changes," she added.
Exercise and a low-fat diet can help individuals who want to lower their cholesterol levels. Additionally, supplements such as niacin and red yeast rice have been proven to reduce cholesterol when taken regularly.
