Scientists at Tufts and Wake Forest University say that the proper adherence to some dietary guidelines could improve health outcomes for women by reducing plaque build-up in the circulatory system.
Research at the two schools focused on heart health improvements using a diet that included higher whole grain intake and lower fat and cholesterol levels in older women.
The data showed that those three nutritional choices had the greatest impact on overall cardiovascular health because they led to reduced clogging in various blood vessels.
While the study found "compliance issues" for women who found it difficult to adhere to the guidelines, according to Dr. Roger Clemens, American Society of Nutritionists spokesman.
He adds that changing dietary restrictions and informing patients could improve usage of the helpful nutritional tips.
For women who may not be able to incorporate each of those recommendations, supplements that include the components of grapes called polyphenols may improve heart health as well, according to researchers from Australia.
They found that the chemicals were shown in several studies to improve the body’s ability to protect the heart and circulatory system.
