Smokeless tobacco can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokeNew research indicates that smokeless tobacco products such as snus or snuff may increase users’ risk of heart attack and stroke.

Dr. Paolo Boffetta at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in France led a team of researchers in analyzing data from 11 studies from the U.S. and Sweden on smokeless tobacco. It is often touted as a safer alternative to smoking tobacco, but they nonetheless found that a small increase occurred in the risk of death relating to heart attacks or stroke.

Although the risk is small, the researchers concluded that the consistency of their data made their conclusions credible.

The researchers worry about the implications of their results; currently, the use of smokeless tobacco is trending upward in Europe and in North America, and the majority of new users are people under the age of 40. They warned that the trend is likely to continue.

Eliminating the risk may be as simple as stopping the use of any tobacco products, but good cardiovascular health can be promoted with supplements that contain Coenzyme Q10 or omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil.ADNFCR-2035-ID-19328341-ADNFCR
