How Your Joint Pain Goes Hand-in-Hand with These Health Concerns
By Dr. Michael Cutler • Oct 28th, 2009 • Category: Dr. Cutler's True Health Blog Archive, Health Articles, Joint HealthAre you one of the millions of Americans who suffer from some type of chronic joint disorder such as arthritis, gout, lupus or fibromyalgia? Although each type of condition has its own unique characteristics, when it comes to the excruciating symptoms of inflamed joints and muscles… stiff neck… sore back… aching hips… cracking knees… swollen feet… and rigid toes and fingers, most all of them cause PAIN. Now studies are finding that some of these joint conditions may also be connected to other types of painful chronic health problems.
Here is what researchers are finding…
- A study published in the Journal of Periodontology indicates a link between severe gum disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Inflammation and infection in the gums seem to be common in those with the joint disorder. This study, as well as another conducted at University Hospitals of Cleveland, show promise in the practice of treating gum disease to relieve some of the arthritis symptoms in people who suffer from both.
- Results of a new study by researchers at the University of Southampton in the UK indicate that due to primary breast cancer treatment, joint pain is more common and more extreme in women fighting breast cancer than women of the same age who do not have breast cancer. This is the first study to compare the number of cases of joint and muscle aches, stiffness and pain in different parts of the body in women with breast cancer—and who’ve had primary breast cancer treatment—with healthy women of a similar age.
- Study results published in Arthritis and Rheumatism indicate that several mood and anxiety disorders are more common in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) when compared with the general population. Of those with lupus who participated in the study, 65 percent were diagnosed with lifetime mood or anxiety problems and 47 percent with major depressive disorder (MDD). Higher percentages of specific phobia, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder were also found.
By understanding that there can be a connection between your chronic joint pain and other health problems—whether your joint pain is the cause or the effect of the other condition—you can take steps toward managing your various symptoms and reducing their impact on your life. Through a healthy lifestyle which includes a whole foods diet, moderate exercise, stress reduction and meditation, you can improve your quality of life. And to help minimize your joint pain, research to find quality supplements that provide your joints and muscles with essential nutrients such as collagen, chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid, astaxanthin and serrapeptase.
