Acid indigestion, commonly known as heartburn, is a burning pain in your esophagus behind your breastbone that moves up into your chest… often working its way to the back of your throat and into your neck, jaw and back. Despite being called “heartburn,” this condition has nothing to do with the heart, although the burning pain associated with both heartburn and heart problems sometimes gets confused.

Unfortunately, many conventional doctors are treating heartburn with antibiotics to destroy the H. pylori bacteria which is believed to be a cause of ulcers. And then there’s the “purple pill” fix that traditional doctors seem to love, but proves again and again to temporarily mask the symptoms but never touch the root of the problem. Both of these so-called solutions decrease your symptoms for a short period of time, but it’s rarely a permanent fix for an overly acidic stomach. Usually, the awful discomfort returns to plague you once again.

Are there any alternatives? Absolutely. You can usually eliminate your heartburn medication in less than two months just by shifting your dietary habits and taking nutritional supplements.

Here are several safe and effective ways to relieve your heartburn. Try eliminating spicy foods, foods with empty calories, unfamiliar foods or even extreme amounts of raw foods which cause a huge surge of acid to be released in your stomach to aid in digestion. And avoid eating and drinking late at night or too early in the morning, especially sodas, sugary or greasy foods. For heartburn relief you should also…

  • Use natural supplements such as a digestive enzyme blend. If you’ve had stomach acid problems for a long time, try two of the digestive enzymes with your meals and drink liquids before or after the meal—instead of during—so the enzymes will not be diluted.
  • Take betaine hydrochloric acid (HCl)—natural stomach acid in a pill—with each meal to minimize your heartburn.
  • Remember to eat when you’re in a calm, relaxed state. Avoid eating on the run or when you’re angry, worried or otherwise upset.

The length of time it takes to heal your heartburn depends largely on your dietary lifestyle, your stomach sensitivity and your stress level. However, by combining a whole foods diet with effective stress management to release positive emotions, you could possibly see an improvement within a week or two.
