A good night’s sleep may now be able to reduce the risk of heart disease, as well as rid one of the bags under people’s eyes.
Researchers from the University of Chicago have found people who receive an extra hour of sleep each night had a 33 percent lower chance of accumulating calcium deposits in their coronary arteries, News.Health.com reports.
That reduction is on par with having about a "16-point drop in systolic blood pressure," according to the article.
"There really is mounting evidence that there likely are subtle health consequences of really short nighttime sleep," Dr. Diane S. Lauderdale, one of the authors of the study, told the news provider. She also said additional research needs to be done, but that it would be a "good idea" for people to get at least six hours of sleep each night.
Approximately 495 men and women, between the ages of 35 and 47, participated in the five-year study and wore wristwatch-like devices to track their movement overnight, states News.Health.com. At the end, 12.3 percent of the volunteers had signs of calcium accumulation in their arteries.
People who have trouble sleeping may want to look into melatonin, a natural sleep aid with no side effects.
