Group says FDA has to better job protecting foodA national organization has responded to the FDA’s recent progress report on its Food Protection Plan and called for "major overhaul."

Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) released a statement on Monday and said that despite the FDA’s protection plan, "too many Americans get sick each year from preventable food-borne illnesses."

"The nation lacks a real plan for food protection. We need a major overhaul matched by major investments to achieve the level of change needed," said Dr. Jeff Levi, executive director of TFAH.

The FDA’s 13-page progress report, also released on Monday, highlights the accomplishments such as establishing offices around the world and developing methods to detect melamine.

In September, melamine was found in Chinese baby formula, which killed at least six infants and sickened about 300,000. Recently trace amounts of melamine in U.S. baby formula was found, though the FDA has said the product didn’t come from China, CNN reports.

Despite the FDA’s efforts to protect food, approximately 76 million Americans are hospitalized from food-borne illnesses each year and about 5,000 die. It’s estimated the total cost from these hospitalizations, as well as lost productivity from workers, adds up to about $44 billion annually.ADNFCR-2035-ID-18911345-ADNFCR
