Leptin is an important substance found in fat cells that causes your brain to shut off your appetite and increase your metabolism. It is produced by visceral adipose tissue (VAT), or the fat that forms around your belly.

A study in Diabetes Journal concluded that carbohydrates and fatty foods in the diet are major causes of leptin resistance—or the inability of leptin to do its job of shutting down hunger.

The study affirmed that the fatty acid content of food causes a problem with the transport of leptin to the brain cells where it must go to have a positive effect. But if you decrease your level of triglycerides—which means eating fewer carbs, sugars and fatty foods—you will raise your leptin levels and activate the appetite-lowering effects of leptin.

But if you’re not careful with your diet, you could start a vicious cycle where you consistently have depleted leptin levels, which causes more belly fat and inflammation—and then it happens over and over again! Every time causing more belly fat and inflammation, which puts a strain on all your body’s organs!

This cycle of leptin reisistance can be caused by eating sugary foods like high fructose corn syrup, and simple carbohydrates, or all those fatty acids found in processed foods that dominate the American diet.

What’s also surprising is the levels of leptin in overweight and obese individuals. You would expect to see very little leptin, since this hormone shuts off appetite. But in reality, leptin levels are high, but they just aren’t functioning properly. The overload of leptin isn’t shutting off their appetite or increasing the metabolic rate as expected!

It takes a conscientious effort to break this vicious cycle of ill health. But you CAN do it—through internal cleansing and eating a whole foods diet. Everything you need to get started on a path toward healthy eating choices can be found in my
90 Days to True Health™ program. Check it out today!
