Healthy Lifestyle Greatly Reduces Chronic Disease Risk

A new study reports that people who live healthy lifestyles may reduce their risk of some of the deadliest chronic diseases–heart disease, diabetes and cancer–by as much as 78 percent.
Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) looked at data from a previous study on cancer that involved more than 23,000 German adults aged between 35 and 65 years. The CDC team noted four healthy lifestyle factors in these participants: not smoking, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight and a nutritional diet.
The team found that 9 percent of participants had all four factors, while 4 percent had none. Follow-up reassessments were made eight years later, and they found more than 2,000 new cases of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and strokes had developed.
Having a low body mass index (BMI) was found to be the most significant factor in reducing risk, followed by not smoking, regular exercise and healthy diet. Maintaining all four factors was linked to a 93 percent reduction in diabetes risk, an 83 percent heart disease risk reduction, 50 percent lower risk of stroke and 36 percent smaller chance of developing cancer.
