Researchers examining supplement for cancer-preventing effectResearchers are reporting a possible benefit of combining a common dietary supplement with other nutrients may be effective in preventing prostate cancer. However, the scientists are quick to stress more research must be done to determine exactly what is going on.

DHEA, steroid hormone produced by the body’s adrenal glands, has been a common over-the-counter supplement because it has been suggested it can reverse aging.

In a report published in Cancer Prevention Research, researchers stated that DHEA levels can be manipulated in cells to understand its effects.

Dr. Julia Arnold, a staff scientist at the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, is currently studying DHEA and said the effects on the prostate by the supplement may depend on how certain cells communicate with each other.

While the research is still in its preliminary stages, it appeared there was a possible cancer-preventing effect when red clover isoflavones were incorporated with DHEA, stated Arnold.

"Something is happening in the prostate tissue microenvironment that is illustrating a potential cancer prevention effect from this supplement," Arnold said.

The doctor said the laboratory manipulation of DHEA may help to unlock possible cancer-preventing effects in other supplements in the future.ADNFCR-2035-ID-19042299-ADNFCR
