Studies find pets can help improve mental and physical healthIt turns out man’s best friend might be helping keep his master healthier.

Researchers say having a pet can help lower blood pressure, encourage exercise and improve psychological health.

"Pets are of great importance to people, especially during hard economic times," said University of Missouri’s Rebecca Johnson. "Pets provide unconditional love and acceptance and may be part of answers to societal problems, such as inactivity and obesity."

Previous studies have highlighted the benefits of having a four-legged friend. The Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction found older adults who walked with a shelter dog five times a week for 12 weeks improved their activity levels compared to their peers who walked with the same regularity with other people.

The people who walked with dogs improved their speed and walking capabilities by 28 percent, versus 4 percent for those who walked with other people.

More than 60 percent of American homes have a pet.

Pet experts say while there are many benefits of owning a cat or dog, people should realize the responsibility and work being a pet owner entails. ADNFCR-2035-ID-19386227-ADNFCR
