Qigong, a tai chi variant, may improve the immune systemWhile some studies have linked Asian therapies to increased health benefits, a modified version of tai chi might provide a low cost alternative for preventive health.

Qigong, according to enthusiasts and practitioners like Michael Winn, is a form of tai chi that he says is more medically effective than yoga and some other forms of tai chi because it works to improve immune system function and open up chi channels.

They also cite a 20-year study that showed that qigong may be linked to reducing the risk for death by stroke by up to 50 percent.

"Studies in the United States and in other countries have shown numerous benefits from Qi Gong," said Dr Brian Lewis, who specializes in internal medicine. "It is an effective, accessible, and empowering form of self care that I have found to be deeply healing for myself and my patients."

He adds that retreats which incorporate Qigong are more affordable than a year of health care premiums, and some practitioners have chosen to go without coverage.

The Oregon Department of Human Services recently began a pilot program in four counties for seniors to use tai chi to prevent some falls after a study from the Oregon Research Institute indicated it might be effective.ADNFCR-2035-ID-19153196-ADNFCR
