Some berries may help limit the need for prescriptionsAs Americans look for ways to stay healthy and avoid costly medical services, it may be fruit that’s taken a leap forward in minds, whether eaten on its own or using extracts as supplements.

The acai berry found in Brazil and sold in American in various forms has doubled its reach and sales, netting roughly $104 million in sales.

Scientists at Texas Agrilife Research were curious to see, with some evidence supporting the benefits of the acai’s antioxidants, whether or not users were actually reaping any benefits.

By testing body fluids of participants, they found that more antioxidants were found in the bloodstream, compounds linked to reduced cancer rates.

While acai berries have received attention recently, other berries and grapes may also provide a benefit for those looking to minimize the effects of aging.

A chemical found in the fruits, pterostilbene, was linked to improved memory in animal models, according to researchers at the Agricultural Research Service.

They say more compounds have promise in related effects, but future studies will be needed to gauge their impact.ADNFCR-2035-ID-19194554-ADNFCR
