Good nutritional habits today can lead to a healthier life tomorrow.
That’s one of the aspects behind National Nutritional Month, dedicated to informing adults and families about the benefits of eating healthily.
However, some health experts say the month is also a chance to educate children on health aspects such as incorporating whole food nutrition in their diet as well as certain vitamins.
America Dietetic Association spokeswoman Melinda Johnson said the earlier health eating habits are instilled in children the better.
"It is never too early to help your child develop a healthy relationship with food," said Johnson. "Healthy habits that begin in childhood can stay with your children as they grow."
Johnson, who is also a registered dietitian, presented some advice to parents about how to engage their children into embracing a nutritious eating lifestyle.
Parents should make family mealtimes a priority, even if it is only one or two times a week, said Johnson. "Research shows that children who eat with their family tend to have a healthier diet," she said.
Johnson also suggested regular physical activity within the family and urged parents to take on healthy eating habits themselves as good role models for their children.
