AHA urging government to help with heart health

Without health care reform from the government, years of progress toward reducing heart disease and stroke could be erased, according to the American Heart Association.
To avoid such a situation, the association has provided lawmakers with the group’s heart health objectives which include prevention strategies and affordable coverage for patients.
"We have a responsibility to urge lawmakers about the issues that concern our patients, particularly as they confront their health care challenges in this tough economic climate," said Timothy Gardner, president of the association. "Time is not on our side."
Risk factors for the condition include smoking, diabetes and a poor diet, according to the association.
However, some people have been able to reduce their risk of heart disease through whole food nutrition and various nutritional supplements, which in turn have also saved on health care costs.
Past research has found eating cherries, which contain compounds called anthocyanins, can benefit one’s heart health as well as adhering to a Mediterranean diet that typically consists of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, fish and low amounts of meat.
