Long considered a weed, kudzu can help treat metabolic syndromeKudzu, the long stretching vines that grow over much of the several million acres in the southeastern U.S., have long been considered little more than weeds in this country. However, a new study is shedding light on the vine’s ability to help treat metabolic syndrome.

The syndrome is characterized by symptoms such as obesity, high cholesterol, hypertension and elevated insulin levels; it is a significant risk factor in the onset of heart disease, diabetes and strokes.

Researchers tested extracts from kudzu vines on rats with symptoms like those found in people with the syndrome, and they discovered that after two months of treatment, the rats showed decreases across all the categories for which they were tested. Rats in the control group were not given the kudzu extract, and they showed no changes.

Kudzu has officially been considered a pest weed since 1953 by the Department of Agriculture. Since its introduction to American soil from Japan to fight erosion, it has grown well beyond its intended use. Fortunately, it may be useful in dealing with a much more significant problem.

Other herbal or natural supplements can also help treat metabolic syndrome symptoms. Some of these include garlic, which can help reduce blood pressure, and Coenzyme Q10, which supports health cardiovascular function.ADNFCR-2035-ID-19336058-ADNFCR
