New research suggests that one of the unlikeliest foods is an excellent source of antioxidants: popcorn.
The findings were presented at the 238th national meeting of the American Chemical Society. Lead researcher Joe Vinson and his team tested several whole grain foods for the presence of polyphenols, which are a kind of antioxidant. They found that popcorn had the highest amount among the foods they tested, with cereals also containing large amounts of the special antioxidant.
Whole grain cereals were also found to contain more polyphenols than processed grain foods.
Until this study, the prevailing theory was that whole grain foods provided health benefits due to their high levels of fiber, which was thought to play a role in lowering cholesterol and reducing cancer and heart disease risk.
Polyphenols work by removing toxins and other harmful particles called free radicals form the blood. They are the ingredient in fruits, chocolate, and wine that make them recommended foods for those attempting to reduce their risk of heart disease.
Other foods rich in antioxidants are black or white tea and pomegranates. Those who prefer a dietary supplement may want to consider Coenzyme Q10 or omega-3 fatty acids, both of which have been associated with reduced risks of heart-related conditions.
