While obesity is often a cause for cardiovascular problems because of fat that accumulates in arteries, researchers say that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) also demonstrates its ability to wear down cartilage in joints. At Boston University, scientists used MRIs to determine risk factors for osteoarthritis, which can cause increasing joint pain as the connective tissue fails to keep bones from moving properly.
