Cherry component, yoga may reduce some symptoms of arthritis

This month is Arthritis Awareness Month, and for those looking to limit the symptoms, some research suggests that relief may come with a cherry on top.
Scientists say that some natural remedies may alleviate the inflammation that can cause pain in arthritis sufferers’ joints, including anthocyanin-filled red fruits like cherries and strawberries, and relaxed stretching such as that found in yoga programs.
A study from Baylor University noted improvements in pain experience and overall function over an eight week period when participants were given cherry extracts.
Relaxation techniques were also found to lower inflammation levels in research done by Massachusetts General Hospital scientists.
Dietary changes are also being recommended by some outside of research circles.
"Often, my clients ask what they can do to manage arthritis pain without medications," says Leslie Bonci, sports nutrition director in the orthopedic surgery department at the University of Pittsburgh. "For many arthritis sufferers, what they eat may help dramatically reduce their arthritis-related pain."
More than 46 million Americans suffered from arthritis in 2005, the latest year for Centers for Disease Control Statistics, including one-fifth of all adults.
