Prebiotics could increase lifespan and improve bone health

While probiotics may be used by some people to increase the number of good bacteria in the gut and improve digestive health, a related product could offer similar benefits.
Prebiotics promote the growth of the bacteria, rather than actually containing them like probiotics, and one company says that one of the benefits may be increased longevity.
A study cited by one doctor found that in animal models, prebiotics helped improve survival rates by 30 percent using a fiber called oligofructose enriched inulin.
The research "clearly demonstrates the colon is a health- and life-giving organ we must nourish and cherish, not just[use as] a waste disposal system," said Dr Frank W. Jackson, founder of a prebiotics supplier.
In the study, scientists also found that when the prebiotics were incorporated into the participant’s diet, there were decreases in body weight and cholesterol levels according to data in the British Journal of Nutrition.
Researchers from the VA Palo Alto healthcare system also found that the supplement could improve bone health by increasing the body’s ability to absorb calcium.
The authors noted "a significant increase in calcium absorption" in patients who were taking prebiotics and had the proper dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D.
