Aromatherapy could reduce stress and muscle pain

One hospital is advocating the benefits of one alternative treatment, aromatherapy, with a workshop set to educate Chicago-area residents about the benefits of bath salts and essential oils.
The Wellness Aromatherapy Workshop at Riverside Health Fitness Center in Bourbonnais, Illinois will teach attendees how to de-stress at home on July 15.
Aromatherapy is considered an aid to recovery from procedures by the hospital staff because of the effect of relaxation on recovery rates, and the non-profit hospital is offering the course for $15 and a complimentary gym pass.
For those who may not be able to attend, however, some tips could help men and women try aromatherapy on their own.
Cherie Perez, a nurse at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, also teaches classes on using scents to improve health.
She recommends incorporating herbs like rosemary for muscle pain, and spearmint for digestive health.
The most common method of inhaling that Perez tells patients to use is to place a few drops of an aromatic oil in a handkerchief and then "fan [oneself] like Scarlett O’Hara."
