Can Chiropractic Treatment Relieve Lower Back Pain?

A new Cochrane review has found that chiropractic treatment is modestly successful in reducing lower back pain and improving disability.
Researchers analyzed 12 randomized controlled trials that included 2,887 participants. Each study compared combined chiropractic interventions to some other therapeutic approach to lower back pain.
Chiropractic interventions typically combine spinal manipulation with such treatments as exercise, massage, heat or electrical stimulation.
The report found that chiropractic is modestly successful in reducing pain of recent onset and improving disability, at least for a few weeks. However, researchers found no evidence that chiropractic works significantly better than care provided by other clinicians.
"If consumers have acute back pain they can have some confidence that if they go to the chiropractor they’ll see some improvement," said the study’s lead author Bruce Walker, who is also a doctor of chiropractic.
Walker noted that the comparison treatments used in the studies were diverse and often overlapped with the chiropractic treatments. They included massage, heat and cold, exercise, physiotherapy, analgesics, lumbar support, spinal manipulation and education.
Researchers also noted that the overall quality of the studies they analyzed was not good and that it is probable that future studies may reach different conclusions.
