While dermatologists commonly prescribe steroids and other medications to reduce the effects of skin problems like rosacea, a diet modification program could also limit flare-ups.
Dr Frank C. Powell responded to a woman asking about alternative treatments in the New York Times, saying that while treatments based on cucumbers have been suggested for years, sulfur-containing creams have been shown to reduce some symptoms of rosacea.
"Some rosacea sufferers, especially those prone to frequent flushing, report benefit from relaxation and stress management techniques," he added in his response for the news provider.
The American Academy of Dermatologists says that reducing intake of common triggers like alcohol, hot beverages and spicy foods could reduce the redness caused by the condition in 36 to 52 percent of patients.
Keeping a journal of foods and their effects could also help rosacea sufferers narrow the list of culprits, according to Dr Susan C. Taylor, since other meal options including chilis, dairy products and even some fruits and vegetables could cause the redness and swelling associated with the disease.
