Liver disease linked to gut bacteria, probiotics may be one option

Probiotics may limit the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver diseaseNew research suggests that gut bacteria in the small intestine may be part of the cause of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, but probiotics or other supplements may help to regulate those levels.

Researchers led by Antonio Grieco in Rome sought to find out whether the condition was affected by the permeability of the small intestine by testing participants with and without celiac disease, which affects the integrity of the small intestine.

They found that the fatty liver disease, one component of metabolic syndrome, was more prevalent in those with high levels of bacteria as well as those who had a compromised small intestine.

"Both intestinal permeability and the prevalence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth are increased in patients with NAFLD and correlate with the severity of steatosis," noted the study’s authors.

Probiotics, including ones based on the strain of the good bacteria Shirota, may help reduce small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, according to researchers at Monash University.

Steatohepatitis affects up to 1 in 20 Americans and can eventually lead to cirrhosis of the liver and the "silent" disease may cause permanent issues if not caught early, according to the National Institutes of Health.ADNFCR-2035-ID-19195863-ADNFCR
