Probiotics may limit the effects of antibiotics on the digestive tract

Without the use of probiotics or other measures to limit their impact, antibiotics may reduce the levels of good bacteria in the digestive tract for up to several weeks, according to a new study.
At the University of Michigan, scientists wanted to find out the specific effect of antibiotics on bacteria measures in the digestive tract, and mapped out the different bacteria in the gut.
They then tested two antibiotics, one called cefoperazone and another that combines amoxicillin, bismuth and metronidazole.
For those given cefoperazone, there was "no recovery" of all the different bacteria, said lead author Dr. Vincent B. Young, adding that with the "amoxicillin-containing combination, the microbiota largely recovered, but not completely."
A reduction in the number of good bacteria has been linked to digestive health concerns like irritable bowel syndrome, he says, and further research may help to confirm whether probiotics are "part of the solution."
While that research is forthcoming, scientists from Kyoto Women’s University say that some types of the "good bacteria" could reduce the risk for stomach ulcers.
They found that certain probiotics helped limit counts of h. pylori, a bacterium that can cause stomach ulcers or malnutrition.
