Study: Cell phone exposure may help fight Alzheimer’s

Researchers say cell phones may provide future treatments for Alzheimer'sA new study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, has found that exposure to electromagnetic waves from cell phones could be beneficial in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

According to WebMD, researchers placed 96 mice in cages around a cell phone antenna that was emitting electromagnetic waves similar to the ones humans are exposed to when they press a phone against their ears. There were both normal animal subjects without signs of memory loss and animals that were genetically engineered to develop Alzheimer’s involved in the study. All were exposed to the waves for two one-hour periods each day for as much as nine months.

They found that exposing mice with Alzheimer’s disease to electromagnetic waves reduced brain deposits of beta-amyloid, which are a known hallmark of the disease.

"It surprised us to find that cell phone exposure, begun in early adulthood, protects the memory of mice otherwise destined to develop Alzheimer’s symptoms," said researcher Dr Gary Arendash. "It was even more astonishing that the electromagnetic waves generated by cell phones actually reversed memory impairment in old Alzheimer’s mice."

Researchers say the findings could lead to new, non-invasive treatments of the disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association says several nutritional supplements are believed to enhance memory and slow the progression of the disease. They include coenzyme-Q10, gingko biloba, coral calcium, huperzine A and omega-3 fatty acids.ADNFCR-2035-ID-19546307-ADNFCR
