Supplements used to improve dental health could also reduce memory decline

Using supplements like xylitol and vitamin D to promote better dental health could also help to reduce memory problems.
Initial research by scientists at West Virginia University has found a link between periodontal health, including plaque build-up and gingivitis, and memory loss as people grow older.
"Older people might want to know there’s more reason to keep their mouths clean, to brush and floss than ever," said dentistry researcher Dr. Richard Crout. "You’ll not only be more likely to keep your teeth, but you’ll also reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke and memory loss."
Funding from the National Institutes of Health will be used to expand the research, the scientists noted, and to provide a more detailed explanation of how the pathway works.
Two supplements, the sugar substitute xylitol and vitamin D, have been linked by recent research with improved dental health.
Xylitol was found by scientists at the University of Washington to reduce the bacteria associated with periodontal disease, and high levels of vitamin D supplementation reduced gingivitis according to data released from Goldman School of Dental Medicine in Boston.
