The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has ranked 26 U.S. cities based on how residents heed dermatologists’ advice on preventing and detecting skin cancer.

Hartford, Salt Lake City and Denver were found to be the most "sun-smart," while Cleveland, Chicago and Pittsburgh were found to be the least "sun-smart."

"One common thread we found encouraging is that the majority of people polled expressed concern about skin cancer and had awareness of the importance of proper sun protection," said dermatologist William James, M.D., president of the Academy. "However, we found that people’s behaviors did not always correlate with their concerns."

The AAD polled more than 7,000 adults nationwide for the results.

Experts recommend individuals everywhere be sun-smart by applying a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher each day, wearing protective clothing and avoiding outdoor activities when the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. In addition, dermatologists say people should rely on a healthy diet and vitamin supplements for vitamin D, rather than sun exposure.

May is Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. Individuals can visit the website MelanomaMonday.org for information on how to perform a self-skin exam as well as other resources for protecting the skin.
