Meditation, Other Alternatives Offer More Brain Power

Scientists who are curious about the effects of meditation say that it may actually beef up some sections of the brain, according to a study from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
They used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of those who had been meditating for an average of 24 years and found that areas of their brains, like the hippocampus, were larger than participants who did not engage in meditation.
"We know that people who consistently meditate have a singular ability to cultivate positive emotions, retain emotional stability and engage in mindful behavior," said lead author Eileen Luders, adding that the growth in the brain may be one explanation why.
Other alternatives to improve brain function include flavanoid-containing food and drink, as well as vitamin D supplementation.
A 2000 study using data from England’s Health Survey found that vitamin D deficiency was linked to cognitive declines in older populations, and the risk for those with the lowest levels of the vitamin were twice as likely to have reduced brain function than those who consumed the recommended amounts.
