If getting to your next paycheck is keeping you up at night, you’re not alone, says the National Sleep Foundation. And an exercise routine that incorporates relaxation techniques like yoga may be one alternative to prescription sleep medications.
A survey conducted by the foundation discovered that employment and financial concerns have left more than one quarter of Americans unable to get a good night’s sleep.
Dr Sunil Matthews says that to get back on track, alternatives to prescription sleep aids may be necessary, as they only offer temporary relief.
Meditation practices like yoga before bedtime may help stressed Americans better ready themselves for rest, Matthews suggests. Other physical activity like exercise should be done earlier in the day so that the body is not trying to cool down while one attempts to fall asleep.
Switching from caffeinated beverages to other options earlier in the day may also help, as could using a bit of nutmeg in a warm non-alcoholic drink to help one relax.
"Stress and anxiety can definitely impact sleep," concludes Matthews. "And unfortunately, insomnia can turn into a vicious cycle."
